Position Summary

To prepare meals, snacks and beverages that are appealing in appearance and taste, and in accordance to the dietary and nutritional needs of the elderly residents.

Essential Duties Include the Following: (Other duties may be assigned).

Preparing complete meals and snacks, taking into consideration all resident needs.
Ability to read/decipher recipes, knowledge of cooking/culinary terms and uses kitchen equipment.
Keeping inventory of food items.
Ordering food from supplier within budget and occasionally picking up miscellaneous items at grocer during work hours.
Ensuring the kitchen and meals provided are served with the highest regard for quality and in a sanitary environment.
Preparing weekly menus according to National Guidelines and adequate level of servings per day. Offering a variety of foods. Being imaginative and flexible to meet differing resident needs, likes/dislikes, textures, special dietary concerns, and according to individual health needs.
Ensuring meals are served in a timely manner and hot foods are served hot – cold foods, served cold.
Stocking pantries/refrigerators and prepping for the future dining needs as directed.
Monitoring supplies to ensure food is not beyond its’ expiration date.
Keeping kitchen and pantry orderly and clean, including cupboards and equipment/appliances. Labeling foods, such as canned goods and leftovers, with contents and date.
Empty waste receptacles routinely throughout the day or cover at all times and keep away from the food area. Disposing of waste in appropriate area in a timely manner.
Being conscientious and concerned for quantity and quality. Know the residents to aid in adequately serving them, such as knowing their portion size and special needs/requests.
Help Care Staff Members with serving, clearing and assisting with meals.
Assist care staff with monitoring and assisting residents and visitors as needed for direction, redirection, 1:1 attention and small group activity as appropriate.
Wash dishes, clean prep areas and maintain a neat and orderly service area per HFS 83.41.
Limiting kitchen visitors to only truly necessary to preserve a sanitary environment for food preparation.
Having waste receptacles covered at all times and away from the food area. Disposing of waste in appropriate area in a timely manner.
Being conscientious and concerned for quantity and quality. Know the residents to aid in adequately serving them, such as knowing their portion size and special requests.
Helping Care Staff Members with serving and clearing and meal times, if needed.
Willingness to prepare special meal times or assist for a special occasion, such as a resident’s party, Mothers Day/Fathers Day/Special Events.
Following company policy and procedures.
Immediately reporting any concern or violation of company policy. Specifically, any observance or knowledge of potential neglect or abuse.
Ensuring facility is secure by monitoring persons entering/leaving the facility, watching for suspicious activity, and utilizing all security measures. Be alert and awake at all times throughout shift.
Responding and assisting during emergencies by following action plans. Remain calm and professional throughout.

Additional Responsibilities

Communicate concerns or suggestions to co-administrators.
Attends company meetings, normally on-site during work hours. May require an occasional meeting before or after regular hours, on or off-site.
Attends authorized training programs as requested.
Works over-time when requested (compensation at 1 ½ times regular rate of pay in excess of 40 hrs per wk)
Work Relationship and Scope

Reports directly to the Kitchen Manager. Works with care providers and other staff members. Works with residents, their family members and loved ones.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

High school graduate or equivalency
Completion of training under the HFS 83 and in accordance with Wisconsin State Law; specifically, First Aid, Fire Safety, Standard Precautions and Dietary (possible others)
Requires excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrates a pleasant, compassionate and helpful personality when working with staff, residents and their families
Ability to write legibly and communicate clearly
Ability to plan, prioritize and organize daily tasks and resident needs
Can work under pressure, stay calm if a crisis arises, and carry out Emergency Action Plans
Analyzes problems and finds solutions
Makes logical decisions, carries them out, and follows-up with feedback when needed
Must approach every aspect of the job with a professional and positive attitude
Must be self-motivated and willing to work as a team player
Complete confidentiality regarding proprietary information in every aspect of the job

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a pleasant, caring and professional environment. May require occasional travel for training functions or meetings.

Physical Requirements

Work is primarily performed in the kitchen/dining areas, on your feet, with various periods throughout the day of lifting, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Occasional periods of lifting of up to 50 lbs. when unloading food and beverage orders.
